Press Releases

ENRECO, Inc.Achieves SQF Level-3 Certification

Newton, WI, December 13, 2011– ENRECO®, Inc., a supplier of flaxseed ingredients, has been awarded SQF 2000, Level 3 Certification by the Safe Quality Food (SQF) Institute and its licensed Certification Body, AIB (American Institute of Baking) for its flax based products. SQF is recognized by the Global Food Safety Initiative and by retailers and foodservice providers worldwide as the epitome of rigorous, credible food safety management systems, with Level-3 being their most demanding certification program.

ENRECO is the only flaxseed manufacturer in North America to attain this level of food safety and quality inspection, assuring their position as the quality leader in the flaxseed ingredient industry.

Sean Moriarty, ENRECO President and CEO stated, "Microbial cleanliness of raw ingredients is always paramount at ENRECO. Since our inception we have been serious about meeting our customers' demands for ingredients of highest cleanliness levels. Their concerns are our concerns."

SQF Level-3 certification for its Sterling Choice® flaxseed ingredients is the most recent achievement of ENRECO's commitment to pro-active, continuous, quality enhancement made when Moriarty bought the company in 2004. Its "Gold Standard Quality" initiative addressed growing industry concerns about whole grain-related issues of cleanliness, safety, and shelf stability by instituting several processes that significantly lowered microbiological limits and greatly extended shelf life without refrigeration.

ENRECO manufactures to Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) standards, employing a third party-validated 5-log Kill Step. The company's Sterling Choice® flaxseed ingredients are guaranteed pathogen-free with very low total microbial values, and are guaranteed shelf stable for a minimum of 24 months under ambient storage conditions.

ENRECO® presents at 2011 Prepared Foods R&D Symposium

Rosemont, IL, Aug. 4, 2011– ENRECO Flaxseed Cutaway Dan Best, ENRECO’s Director of Sales & Technical Services, gave a presentation titled “Whole-Grain Controversies in the Making” to an audience of industry food scientists, academics and food ingredient specialists. Best was one of a number of supply-side experts to give presentations at Prepared Foods' R&D Applications Seminar in Chicago, August 2-3, 2011, in Rosemont, Illinois.

Key elements addressed by Best were as follows:

1. The issue of whole-grain food safety is an increasingly important public health issue to the Food & Drug Administration. That is because whole grains are incorporated into foods with only minimum processing after harvest. A number of salmonella and E. coli outbreaks have already been traced to whole seeds and nuts. ENRECO has taken a leadership position in addressing this issue by implementing a 5-log pathogen kill step for all of its flaxseed ingredients. ENRECO is also on schedule to complete its SQF Level-3 certification in 2011. Why is this important? Ask yourself, “What food manufacturing plant wants to introduce large numbers of microbial colonies, including pathogenic microbes, into its food-processing environment?”

2. Claims that plant-sourced, short-chained omega-3 (ALA) is somehow an inferior dietary source of omega-3 are not warranted, based on studies that demonstrate very rapid conversion of ALA into long-chain EPA and DHA omega-3s by the liver to meet the body’s natural requirements. In addition, all the available evidence indicates that vegetarians appear to have quite adequate omega-3 status, despite not eating fish, krill or meat and consuming only short-chain ALA omega-3. Much of the past confusion regarding this issue is believed to be attributable to deficiencies in serum sampling for omega-3 status. Flaxseed is an excellent, low-cost source of omega-3, even at low levels of incorporation into foods.
Omeg-3 Liver Metabolism

3. Americans are 50% omega-3 deficient and the sustainability of food sources is becoming an increasingly important public issue. What to do?

The National Academy of Science /Institute of Medicine recommends that Americans consume the added equivalent of 1.4g ALA (or ½ tbsp flaxseed) per day) in their diet or 0.5g EPA or DHA (equivalent to one serving of salmon per day) to redress this deficiency. Oceanic fisheries are under pressure. Flaxseed is grown as a rotational crop, which makes it quite sustainable and good for the soil. Even so, there is not enough fish, krill, flaxseed, hemp or any other major omega-3 food source harvested worldwide to meet global dietary omega-3 needs: all sources have a place in the food supply.

4. The lack of a Food & Drug Administration-approved definition for whole grains continues to confuse consumers. The FDA first requested public commentary on a proposed label in 2006. There are two points of view: some proponents believe that this definition should apply only to cereal grains (taxonomically related to grasses) and pseudocereals (not well defined, but generally regarded as non-cereal seeds used in foods much the same way as cereals). The other definition, a nutritional-based definition, would include all seeds, recognizing that the goal of promoting whole-seed consumption is to increase consumption of the antioxidant and other phytonutrients present in the outer seed layers (i.e., bran). ENRECO believes that the focus of whole-grain labeling should include all seeds.

ENRECO®, Inc. Maintains Organic Certification

Newton, WI, June 29, 2011– ENRECO®, Inc., a ENRECO Flax Mill recently received organic certification from OneCert, Inc., Lincoln, NE, for the seventh consecutive year. Certification is for North America and the European Union.

Dan Otte, ENRECO Director of Quality Assurance, stated, “We’re very happy that, once again, ENRECO has proven that its production and handling systems are top quality, bar none. OneCert’s requirements and inspections are tough and ENRECO has met the challenge by instituting exacting manufacturing processes.”

OneCert inspects food manufacturing facilities yearly to verify compliance with the USDA National Organic Program. Its rigid and all-encompassing production and handling regulations are designed to prevent contamination of organic products with non-organic ingredients.

Auditor Comments include “It appears to be a well managed operation,” “The audit trail is excellent,” and there are “No issues or concerns.”

ENRECO®, Inc. Validates Flaxseed Kill-Step for Pathogens

Newton, WI, May 17, 2011– ENRECO®, Inc., a supplier of wholegrain flaxseed and sorghum ingredients, announced that it has obtained third-party verification of a 5-log kill step for its flaxseed ingredient processing lines. This is well in excess of the FDA-mandated threshold for pathogen kill-step validation.

“This is one more important milestone in our commitment to provide the food industry with high-quality ingredients that are clean, safe and consistent,” commented Sean Moriarty, ENRECO president. Moriarty added that, “this step reaffirms ENRECO’s commitment to operate at the leading edge of the Global Food Safety Initiative.”

Because of their relatively unprocessed natures, whole grains and nutmeats have been sources of concern as potential vectors for the introduction of foodborne pathogens into baking and other food processing environments. While never having experienced problems in the past, ENRECO has now taken this additional step to further safeguard the reputation of their premiere Sterling Choice® brand.

ENRECO®, Inc. Earns “Superior” AIB Rating for Fourth Year

Newton, WI, September 22, 2010– ENRECO®, Inc., a AIB Superior Rating logoleading manufacturer and innovator of stabilized, ground flaxseed ingredients and custom grain blends, recently completed an American Institute of Baking (AIB) inspection at its Newton, WI production facility earning a “Superior” rating for the fourth year in a row.

“We are absolutely pleased to have achieved AIB’s highest rating for four consecutive years now, even while incidents of food product recalls in the last two years have caused AIB to toughen their inspections considerably,” stated Sean Moriarty, ENRECO president.  “Food manufacturing procedures are continuing to be monitored closely, which only affirms our commitment to maintain the highest level of quality and food safety.”

A comprehensive AIB inspection includes audits of a facility’s food safety programs, HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) program, management systems, pest control programs, operational methods, personnel practices, buildings and equipment maintenance, and cleaning practices.  Each category is individually scored, ranked, and tallied, resulting in the company’s overall score.

AIB International is a corporation founded by North American wholesale and retail baking industries in 1919.  Originally created to apply sciences to baking, AIB now has an expanded mission of providing research, technology, education, and safety to the baking industry.

ENRECO’s Superior AIB rating reflects well on all its product lines. Food manufacturers depend upon the integrity of its suppliers and the wholesomeness of purchased ingredients.  They are heartened by the consistently superior AIB ratings given to ENRECO, Inc.  ENRECO flaxseed flours are used in breads and related food items that are baked, formed or extruded, including cereals, pastas, energy bars, snack foods, pizza crusts, and sauces.  ENRECO’s flagship Sterling Choice® stabilized, ground flaxseed –with its proprietary stabilization process giving it long shelf life and extremely low microbial counts–is continuing to be in high demand by food manufacturers as the nutritional and functional benefits of flaxseed as an “ancient grain” super food are becoming more widely understood and demanded by consumers.

ENRECO®, Inc. Awarded Governor’s Export Achievement Award

Newton, WI, May 12, 2010 – ENRECO®, Inc., a leading manufacturer and innovator of stabilized, ground flaxseed ingredients and custom grain blends, has been awarded the 2010 Governor’s Export Achievement Award in the Small Agriculture category. The plaque was presented to ENRECO, along with six recipients in other categories, by Governor Jim Doyle at ceremonies during the 46th Annual Wisconsin International Trade Conference at the Milwaukee Italian Community Center.

ENRECO®, Inc. is the reason that Wisconsin is the leading producer of manufactured flaxseed products for human and animal consumption in the United States. Under the ENRECO® and Omega Fields® brand names, flaxseed-based bulk ingredients and retail products are sold and shipped around the world.

“We are very pleased that our export efforts have been recognized by the State of Wisconsin,” stated Sean Moriarty, President of ENRECO. “From the beginning we recognized the need to expand our market internationally not only for increased sales opportunities but also for the safety net that a diversified market provides.”

Ravin Rajan, VP–Operations who initially developed ENRECO’S export program added, “Export sales and compliance are extremely important for ENRECO’s future—as they should be for many businesses in Wisconsin and our country. Our entire economy is affected by our national surplus or deficit, and that is determined in great part by our nation’s balance of trade. We now live in a ‘global village.’ In the economic turmoil we had last year, the weakened US dollar has helped capture many new market segments and made ENRECO products more cost effective to purchase”.

ENRECO’s diverse line of Omega-3 rich, stabilized, flaxseed and custom blend flours are non-GMO, Kosher certified, and also available as organic. The company’s facilities and manufacturing processes are inspected yearly by the American Institute of Baking. Food manufacturers depend upon the integrity of its suppliers and the safety of their food products and are heartened by the consistently “Superior” AIB ratings given to ENRECO, Inc.

Premium food manufacturers include ENRECO® ingredients in breads and related food items that are baked, formed or extruded, including pastas, cereals, energy bars, snack foods, sauces, and pizza crusts.  Ground flaxseed – especially ENRECO’s Sterling Choice® with its proprietary stabilization process giving it a minimum two-year shelf life – is in high demand by food manufacturers as the nutritional and functional benefits of this “ancient grain” super food are becoming more widely understood.

ENRECO® now ships to fourteen countries outside of the U.S. and has experienced strong export growth of 90% within the last three years, now comprising about 15.5% of total sales.  Export sales are targeted to grow to 25% by the end of 2011, an increase of over 60%

“Not only have we avoided any workforce reduction due to the current recession, ENRECO® has actually invested in people, processes, and capital spending during this time in preparation for increasing sales and production,” noted Moriarty.
